Sodium and Hair Testing

Sodium is one of the most important minerals in the body that shows in the hair test. If sodium is imbalanced – either too low or too high – as compared to the other minerals of calcium, magnesium and potassium, then important functions in the body that require sodium are altered.
Sodium is referred to as the “volatility” mineral. Low hair sodium in a hair test is excellent indicator of impaired adrenal gland activity. A very low sodium is indicative of exhaustion. Note that hair must not be washed at the laboratory for accurate readings. High hair sodium is indicative of excessive adrenal gland activity often indicates excitability and fast metabolism. Sodium levels can be elevated by toxic metals, especially cadmium.
Conditions Associate with Altered Sodium Levels
Gastritis
High sodium relative to potassium has been associated with a gastritis-like condition.
